Construction chemicals are a type of chemicals that account for a relatively small proportion of cement and concrete, but can significantly improve certain properties of concrete. Simply by adding them to cement and concrete, the amount of water added can generally be reduced, thereby improving the strength and durability of concrete, changing the flow properties of concrete, and increasing its operability. More importantly, construction additives can save building materials and reduce project costs.
There are many types of construction chemicals, but their functions are different. These building chemicals mainly include water reducers, retarders, air entraining agents (AE agents, air entraining agents), accelerators, early strength agents, antifreeze agents, expansion agents, waterproofing agents, anti-cracking agents, and composite additives. Next, we will introduce the more common water reducers and retarders.
- Water reducers are divided into ordinary water reducers and high-efficiency superplasticizers. Ordinary water reducers refer to admixtures that have a general water-reducing and enhancing effect while keeping the consistency of concrete unchanged. Main ingredients: lignin sulfonate, alkali lignin, sulfonated sodium humate, etc. High-efficiency superplasticizers refer to additives that have a significant water-reducing and enhancing effect while keeping the consistency of concrete unchanged. The main ingredients are: methyl naphthalene sulfonate, naphthalene sulfonate, polynaphthalene sulfonate, sodium salt of β-naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate, coumarone-indene resin, sulfonated melamine formaldehyde resin, etc.
- Retarder refers to an admixture that delays the setting time of concrete and has no adverse effect on the later strength of concrete. The general construction requirement is that the daily minimum temperature must not be lower than 5°C, and it should not be used alone for concrete projects with early strength requirements and steam curing. Main ingredients: wood sulfonates, hydroxy acids, sugars and carbohydrates, amino acids and their salts, humic acid, tannic acid, magnesium fluoride, phosphoric acid and its salts or esters, boric acid, zinc salts, phenol, and polyacrylic acid compounds.
Types of Construction Chemicals in Kingsun
- Sodium gluconate 98% min as concrete retarder. When adding a certain amount of sodium gluconate to cement, it can make the concrete strong and random, and at the same time, it also delays the Initial and final setting time of concrete without affecting the strength of concrete.
- Sodium Lignosulfonate as ordinary water reducer. Adding it to concrete can reduce water consumption by more than 13%, improving the workability of concrete, and can greatly reduce the heat of hydration in the early stage of cement hydration.
- Calcium Lignosulfonate as ordinary water reducer. It can improve the workability of concrete and improve the quality of the project. And it is generally used in combination with superplasticizers.
- SNF as Concrete Superplasticizer. The water reduction rate of SNF can reach up to 15-25%. What’s more, when the strength and slump are basically the same, it can also reduce the amount of cement used by 10-25%. therefore, SNF is especially suitable for the preparation of high-strength concrete, steam-cured concrete, fluid concrete, impermeable concrete, waterproof concrete, plasticized concrete, steel bars and prestressed reinforced concrete.
- PCE as Concrete Superplasticizer. As a new generation of high-efficiency water reducing admixture, PCE has a high water reduction rate with a low dosage. Its water reduction rate can be as high as 45%. It is often used to prepare high-strength and high-performance concrete.
Why construction chemicals play an important role
Construction chemicals play a vital role in the construction industry. They can improve construction efficiency, improve material performance, save energy and protect the environment, meet special needs, repair and maintain buildings, and improve construction quality. Therefore, the rational use of these chemicals in construction projects is essential to ensure the success of the project.
- Improve construction efficiency. Many construction chemicals, such as concrete additives, adhesives and sealants, can significantly increase construction speed and efficiency. For example, concrete additives can improve the fluidity and strength of concrete, making it easier to apply and longer-lasting.
- Improve material properties. These chemicals can improve the properties of building materials, such as durability, strength and stability. Waterproof coatings can prevent moisture penetration, while anti-corrosion agents can extend the service life of metal components.
- Energy saving and environmental protection. Some construction chemicals have energy-saving and environmental protection properties. For example, the use of thermal insulation coatings can reduce the energy consumption of buildings, while green building materials can reduce the impact on the environment.
- Meet special needs. In construction projects, specific performance requirements such as fire protection, sound insulation or earthquake resistance often need to be met. Construction chemicals, such as fire retardant coatings and sound insulation materials, can easily meet these needs.
- Repair and maintenance. In addition to their use in the construction phase, construction chemicals also play an important role in repair and maintenance. For example, cleaners and coatings can be used to protect building materials from erosion and damage, thereby extending their service life.
- Improve the quality of construction. By using high-quality construction chemicals, the overall quality of the construction project can be ensured. These chemicals help ensure the integrity and stability of the building structure, thereby improving the safety and comfort of the building.
- Adapt to a variety of building types and uses. Construction chemicals are suitable for a variety of building types and uses, including residential, commercial, industrial and public facilities. Whether it is a new construction project or a renovation project, these chemicals can be used to meet specific needs and standards.
- Reduce costs. Although construction chemicals may increase initial costs, they can reduce overall costs by improving construction efficiency, extending service life and reducing maintenance needs. Therefore, in the long run, the use of these chemicals can bring economic benefits to construction projects.
