Defoamers don’t make air trapped in concrete magically disappear. They work by breaking up the foam that concrete creates during the mixing process. Common ingredients that can create foam are polymers, high-range water reducers, and pigments.
Defoamers help prevent foam from forming in the first place, so air stirred into the concrete during the mixing process doesn’t form foam.
Tiny air bubbles can get stuck inside sand, fibers, and thick, hard concrete. Defoamers break these tiny bubbles apart, creating larger bubbles. Larger bubbles have a better chance of escaping because they can force their way up and out of the mix, but the mix must allow these bubbles to rise and escape on their own.
Because of how they work, defoamers are most effective at removing trapped air when the concrete is very fluid. For this reason, defoamers are best used in conjunction with a strong water reducer like PCE.
Generally, defoamers are added to the concrete mixing plant in a certain proportion and mixed with cement, aggregates, etc. The specific amount of addition needs to be adjusted according to the specific formula of concrete and engineering requirements.
During use, attention should be paid to stirring evenly to avoid local concentration of defoamers in concrete, which will affect its effect. In addition, excessive use may cause the performance of concrete to deteriorate, while insufficient use may not achieve the expected defoaming effect.
